Vacation, Part 2

Vacation number 2 came right on the heels of the Minneapolis trip, and it took place just 100 miles north of home. The rest of my family gathered at my parents' house for the 4th of July weekend. It was mostly just hanging out and trying to get my nephew to say my name over and over ("Lin" is about all he can manage right now), but there were a few highlights:

On Friday we went to Riverdale Resort in Preston, ID. It's sort of a water park--it has a heated pool, an olympic pool, and a of couple water slides. We hadn't been to this place in over 10 years--it used to be pretty popular. It was a ghost town last Friday. The place is sort of falling apart--slime on the pool floors, deteriorating picnic tables, grass so dry it stabs your feet. BUT we still had a blast. We had the one functioning water slide all to ourselves. We must have gone down it over two dozen times, limited only by how many times we could climb the 4 stories to the top. The only downer to this adventure was the sun--even slathered up in sunscreen, the sun was so intense we all got burned. Ouch.

The next night my dad took me and my siblings on a scenic drive, first to feed my cousin's pigs and see some baby goats, and then to go look at some mountains. What started out as a relaxing, quick drive turned into a wild goose chase up rocky mountain paths, across cattle guards, and into "no trespassing" zones. In a little Honda Civic. We drove for miles on gravel and dirt roads filled with giant rocks and ruts and we were a little afraid the car would break somehow and we'd have to walk back down the mountain. Surprisingly, it was the trunk hatch that went. I helped hold it closed from the back seat for part of the bumpy ride home.

The main highlight of my weekend? My nephew saying my name. Or part of my name. He is darling.
